How to install a Noble Niche to line up with grout lines. A noble niche is a one piece foam insert that is used to create a niche in a shower wall without the need to frame the opening, then clad with backer board and finally waterproof. The Noble Niche eliminates all that and is installed simply by cutting a hole in the backer board the size of the insert and then adhering it to the inside cavity of the wall. The Noble niche is designed to fit between two 2″x4″ framing studs which are a standard 16″ on center. It can also be placed anywhere in a wall where there is room. Once the Niche is installed it can be tiled using standard tiling methods and thinset. If tile alignment with grout lines is not important then no care needs to be taken regarding the placement of the Noble Niche other than ensuring that it be level. If the size of the Noble niche is the same as the size of the tile, then with carful layout and placement it can be installed so that the finished Niche is exactly in line with all grout lines. To install the Noble niche a hole is cut out of the backer board the exact size of the niche, it is then inserted into the cavity and adhered with 100% silicone. The silicone can be placed on the back of the opposite partition of the wall cavity or the studs. A bead of silicone should also be placed on the edge of the backer board being careful to avoid getting the silicone on the surface of the backer board. The seams are then covered with fiberglass mesh tape and imbedded with thinset.
